McMurdo Smartfind Plus G5
406MHz Satellite EPIRB

The next generation in EPIRB technology, the McMurdo Smartfind Plus G5 406MHz Satellite EPIRB, combines all the features of the E5 and the accuracy of a 12 channel GPS position fixing receiver with the strength, safety and durability of a fully compliant GMDSS EPIRB.

The GMDSS rules require all vessels over 300gt to carry a float free EPIRB. This has been extended by the South African Authorities to include fishing vessels and now also includes leisure craft and small commercial vessels in Category A which are licensed to operate more than 40 miles offshore. By July 2006 this would also have included craft in Category B & C which are licensed to operate between 5 and 40 miles offshore. However SAMSA has granted an extension until 2007 for these classes of vessel, see News.

McMurdo’s EPIRB features a compact and functional design with a small mounting footprint.

  • GMDSS compliant, EU wheelmark and SAMSA approved
  • Satellite location by 12 channel integrated GPS.
  • Global distress alerting
  • Small and lightweight
  • Unique Carrysafe bracket for transportation of the
    manual unit
  • Fully enclosed housing for Float Free version
  • 6-year shelf life on the battery
  • Non-hazardous battery may be airfreighted.
  • Protected from inadvertent operation while in its bracket
  • Comprehensive self-test and diagnostic facilities
  • Minimum 48 hours of operation when activated

For GMDSS compliance, the G5a Smartfind Plus 406MHz Satellite EPIRB has a slimline fully enclosed float free housing which allows self-testing of the EPIRB in question. The McMurdo G5 Smartfind Plus also available with a quick release bulkhead mounting bracket for carry-off situations, type G5m. In both cases the unit will automatically operate if removed from the bracket and placed in sea water.

The built in 12 channel GPS receiver improves both the accuracy of the position received by the Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) and reduces time taken for it to be received. This enables the Rescue Centre to make a faster more effective response to an alert. Being integrated into the EPIRB rather than being connected to it externally and requiring a download instruction before receiving a position eliminates the risk of the GPS position not being available when required. The exact position is relayed to the authorities and updated at regular intervals.

As with the E5, the G5 EPIRB may be fitted in either the manual release bracket or the automatic float free bracket. Therefore upgrading from manual to float free operation is straight forward.
